History Comes To Life In ‘The Admiral: Roaring Currents’ [Giveaway]

David meets Goliath in the Imjin War epic film, The Admiral: Roaring Currents.

The 2014 film, directed by Kim Han Min, revolves around a famous battle in the 16th century when Admiral Yi Sun Shin defeats a Japanese fleet of over 300 ships with only 12 Korean ships. Yi saved the country and Choi Min Sik brings the titular character to life in a groundbreaking, award winning role.

Choi Min Sik delivers once again in a stellar performance that follows roles in top Korean films like Old Boy and Shiri. The Admiral: Roaring Currents is the latest of the films that the actor stars in to win an abundance of awards. Choi’s Yi is disgraced and haunted by the dead after the Korean fleet is decimated in battle, and has nothing else to do but die trying to save the Joseon era-Korea from falling to the Emperor of Japan’s fleet. Despite the King of Joseon’s orders, and a as other members of the previously grand fleet protest Yi’s decisions to fight against the Japanese navy, Yi pushes forward to protect his homeland. He has few ships, and his men have no hope, but he perseveres.

The turning point in the film comes when an officer, in despair, burns one of Yi’s last Turtle Ships, a type of ship used by the Korean navy under Yi that was more well protected than other Korean ships and less likely to be boarded by the Japanese. Choi’s Yi Sun Shin falls into despair, and even madness, as he sets out to make a final stand with even fewer, less stalwart ships. The Admiral KultScene review 1

There are many side characters in The Admiral: Roaring Currents, all of whom are interesting, but the focus is on Yi Sun Shin. However, the secondary characters add depth to the film, particularly the bloodthirsty Japanese leader Kurushima Michifusa (Ryu Seung Ryong,) sniper Haru (No Min Woo,) and the heartbreaking couple made Im Jin Yeong (Jin Goo) and his mute love, Lady Jeong (played by singer-turned-actress Lee Jung Hyun).

The Admiral is an emotional film, with Yi’s honor and the survival of the Joseon kingdom at stake, but at the heart of it is the Battle of Myeongnyang. The battle takes up the second half of the movie, and is filled with explosions and intense battle scenes. Great detail was put into the costuming, depicting the extravagant visuals of the Japanese officers and more modest trappings of the Korean military leader and peasants.

The Admiral KultScene 2

The scenery in The Admiral is stunning, particularly the water mentioned in the English title of the film. (The Korean title of the film is Myeongnyang, named after the battle depicted. The permeating darkness throughout the film, a haunting, daunting darkness, is oppressive to the degree that even the audience of The Admiral is likely to doubt the outcome.

But the film’s spectacular battle is filled with surprise after surprise, and the film ends with a poignant note, with Yi’s son pondering his father’s lesson that a leader, military or otherwise, has to put faith in both nature and the people he/she rules.

The size of Yi’s victory over Japan is debated by Japan and Korea, but Yi Sun Shin is one of South Korea’s most iconic heroes and Choi’s depiction lives up to the stature of the man whose statue is placed in the center of Seoul at Gwangwhamun Square.

You’re Missing Out If You’re Not Watching The Cohabiting K-Drama ‘The Lover’

k drama the lover takuya

Love meets modernity when it comes to an episode of Mnet’s The Lover, a drama based around four couples living together. The show is groundbreaking in South Korea, where most people live with their parents until marriage, and many Korean dramas revolve around people who date only to get married.

Before the show began, I was worried that The Lover would try to tone down nontraditional aspects and just be an overall cute show. But if anything, The Lover flouts K-drama convention and does so with tender, humorous moments mixed with an amazing soundtrack.

The Lover is based on an apartment building, where four pairs of people live together without being married. One couple are hard workers who like not being married, one is an older woman with her young, broke boyfriend, the third is a man and a woman who started dating recently and live together to save money prior to getting married, and the fourth is a pair of roommates who has more sexual tension than most of the couples.

Two Couples Provide The Heart of The Lovers

The show is about four couples, but there are two main ones. Oh Do Si (Oh Jung Se) and Ryu Doo Ri (Ryu Hyun Kyung) are a pair of thirty-somethings living together in what appears to be a love-hate relationship, with constant bickering and consistent teasing. However, when it comes down to it, the pair are really good for one another and support one another when they’re feeling down. Sometimes, one of them makes the wrong decision, but at the end of each episode, the two are happy with one another and their little tiffs are just signs of endearment. Along with working through their relationship, the Do-Doo couple turn out to have a lot of interesting fun together, especially in the bedroom.

The next main couple is thirty-year-old Choi Jin Nyuh (Choi Yeo Jin) and Jung Yeong Joon (Jung Joon Young). They also have problems, particularly with their age differences, but Jung Yeon Joon’s spazztic personality (in and out of the show…) brings about a lot of laughters. The first episodes include one memorable scene with a glow in the dark condom and a lost earring. Do-Doo are endearing and relatable, but it’s the Choi-Jung couple that is laugh out loud funny.

Sul Eun & Hwan Jong Are Skillfully Awkward

Ha Sul Eun (Ha Eun Sul) and Park Hwan Jong (Park Jong Hwan) are a brand new couple that don’t really know what they’re doing with one another, and haven’t had a lot of time to develop. Sul Eun doesn’t want Hwan Jong to know what a woman does when men aren’t around (pooping, shaving armpits, etc.) and Hwan Jong doesn’t really know what he’s doing with her. With three episodes of the show done, hopefully this couple will get more development in future episodes, rather than just exhibit an example of cohabiting gone horribly wrong.

Takuya and Joon Jae Are Eye Candy While Pushing Boundaries

Speaking of horribly wrong, here is horribly right, at least for many fans of K-dramas. Will they, won’t they? There has been a push in recent years in dramas to highlight homosexual relationships, (i.e. ” Answer Me 1997″), but this is the first time it is so overtly done by the writers, likely to make fan girls swoon while watching Cross Gene’s Terada Takuya and actor Lee Jae Joon play the roles of, what else? Takuya and Lee Joon Jae. The two men get highlighted throughout the show for their looks and height (in comparison to the other male leads,) and act like typical roommates. Until they consider watching china residents fuck and all of a sudden they’re watching porn together in the bed that they share… Because Takuya is too tall to sleep on the couch.

It is actually surprising that they were able to find a way to watch such things, as most porn sites have been blocked these days. Maybe they decided to do some research on sites like VPNCompass.com to see how they can unblock some of these sites so they can heighten their sexual pleasure. It definitely has a chance of working. Although it’s unclear whether the sexual tension will turn into anything, but whether it’s for humor or to gain media play, Takuya and Jae Joon are good for one another as roommates. Takuya’s outgoing personality meets Jae Joon’s gentler, cooler attributes, and their few minutes each episode leads to a lot of cultural, linguistic understandings and a lot of laughs.

The Soundtrack Makes Everything Worth It

Many Korean television shows have a few very stellar songs that play repeatedly throughout the show. The Lover has a new song every few minutes, with the song’s name and artist to help anybody out if they want to find all of the information out. A lot of indie artists get airtime in a way that’s unusual for Korean dramas, including 10cm and Victim Mentality, and each song is played with meaning and timing.

If you’re looking for heartbreak and overdramatic-ness, The Lover isn’t for you. If you’re looking for a good time and a lot of modern relationships, then it’s worth a few hours of your time.

Playlist Sunday: CF Jingles

kpop playlist cf jingles songs commercials

Unless the commercials are about makeup, a majority of South Korean commercials, better known as CFs, tend to land on the corner of cheesy and can occasionally be overly exaggerated. However, we could say the same for some K-pop acts and K-Dramas, and, well, we all love them for it! So that’s why at KultScene, we’ve put together a list of our favorite CF jingles performed by K-pop artists, ranging from the hysterically corny to the overtly sweet ones.

This Fanta commercial titled Fanta Idol had potential of being a rather studious one, considering how it’s centered around students, played by singer and YG Entertainment artist Kang Seungyoon and actress Baek Jinhee. But it’d be a bit boring if you just had people singing about a sugary carbonated drink, right? So who better to cast to heighten and take the commercial to a whole another level of entertainment other than funny man Lee Kwangsoo? I’m glad the director and his team realized that aside from pleasing the music loving fan girls’ hearts, that they had to add a comedic concept to the video in order to reach a wider range of audiences and to promote sales. Although it’s a lengthy and cringe worthy commercial, it was an entertaining three minutes and forty-nine seconds well spent.

You’re My First isn’t one of INFINITE’s best songs, but as a funky dance song with a smattering of the group’s signature synchronized dance moves, the Samsung Galaxy Player ad works. Each of the seven members had individual, shorter ads for general commercial use, but the group’s short music video for the song features all of the members, while highlighting L’s dancing while watching videos on his new phone. INFINITE looks good and makes the product look good, so there’s not much more to ask for.

2NE1‘s CF for Fiore for the Yamaha motorcycle not only gave us a good commercial with great styling back then, but also a music video for their song Don’t Stop The Music. The only difference in the song from the original is that every now and then we hear them saying “Fio, Fio, Fiore.” It’s really funny when I listen to the original song and I catch myself singing the CF version. The girls managed to stay true to themselves and even if the CF is a bit cheesy, they look and act fierce.

— Alejandro

SNSD and 2PM‘s Cabi Song music video for Caribbean Bay will get you excited for the Summer months ahead. They manage to create a mini love story based on the training of the Caribbean Bay lifeguards, SNSD members Seohyun, Yuri, and Yoona and 2PM’s Taecyeon, Chansung, and Nichkhun. The song showcases the vocal talents of both groups and creates the perfect background music for the plot of the music video. Aside from the love story theme, the MV shows off the beautifully toned bodies of the idols.

— Tara

When I look back at Super Junior eras, A-cha is probably one of my favorites style-wise, so of course I’ll choose a CF from that time. Being one of Asia’s biggest (fame and size wise) groups, it comes to no surprise that Lotte Duty Free loves to feature them on their ads. With So I’m Loving You, the guys delivered a signature Super Junior song, complete with the right doses of cheesiness and upbeat dance music. I don’t know if dancing mid-twenty year old men makes women run to the shop, but maybe them being plastered all over the store is incentive enough.

Nothing says “buy a phone!” like nine beautiful girls dancing in perfect unison and singing about love as addictive as chocolate. If you disagree with this statement then you don’t understand how advertising works and you’re missing out on what is actually a great song amongst Girls’ Generation’s perfect discography. Chocolate Love sounds like a simplified test run for SNSD’s later single Run Devil Run. It has an almost identical beat, which actually plays by itself for long runs of this song, lending the song a stripped back, more mature sound. To contrast this the song contains teetering synths and horns to hold back what could have been a serious song. Vocally, it also has some interesting things for a SNSD song. The chorus is a satisfyingly fun mesh of the different voices of the group with Jessica’s sickly sweet vocal as the major one. As always, SNSD go above and beyond what is expected to produce a commercial song that stands alone as a part of their career.

What’s Up With Rome & C-Clown?

c clown c-clown crown the clown romeEarlier this week fans of C-Clown‘s leader, Rome, were shocked when he tweeted a message to fans and drastically altered his Instagram account. Nothing has been officially released from Rome, C-Clown, or Yedang Entertainment, but his recent social media behavior left us to speculate about a few things.

Rome is the charismatic, Korean-Australian leader of C-Clown. He is known as one of the rappers of the group and is notorious for his superb dancing and b-boy skills. In fact, followers of Rome’s Instagram account will remember seeing video clips of his freestyle dancing and killer b-boy moves. There were days where Rome would post several video clips of himself and his members on Instagram, updating the fans on his and C-Clown’s whereabouts; he even made a public Facebook page in which he used as a universal platform to socialize with the Crowns (C-Clown’s fanclub) and SALTs, (Rome’s personal fanclub’s name from his b boy days back in Australia).

C-Clown last released a single in the summer of 2014. Let’s Love showed off more of the boys’ singing, rapping, and dancing talents. It was a good step in the right direction for more commercial success for C-Clown, and it allowed them to take another step towards stardom. But there was no follow-up, unfortunately. Since July, there hasn’t been any big events involving C-Clown. Even Rome, who was usually quite active on Instagram, was quiet and not sharing as much with his fans (SALTS).

Also on KultScene: SM Entertainment: The ‘Brand’

The hiatus definitely left room for speculation, seeing how it was a bit odd for someone who was as active as Rome on social media to die off and leave the fans hanging. He stopped filming and posting his CTC (Crown The Clown) series on C-Clown’s official YouTube Channel, although he had stated that he was going to air a new season, and when he would post on social media, the messages were vague.

C-Clown shares a brotherly bond; a majority of the time, if Rome isn’t featuring one of his members in his videos or photos, then one of the members would be sharing photos that they took with their leader on their social media platforms. But with the passing months, that no longer seems to occur.

It wasn’t until April 21 (KST) that Rome reappeared on Instagram, but with a different name, Christian Yu. Not only was his name different, but all of his previous posts were deleted. As of today, there still are no posts. Moreover, his Twitter handle was changed to @neva4get_urself with Christian Yu as his name. With the changes on Twitter and Instagram, it came as no surprise that Rome then tweeted the following:

Did something happen to their bond? Did Yedang abandon C-Clown? Clearly something happened that may have resulted in the leaving of Rome from C-Clown or the disbandment of the group as a whole. Even if C-Clown is not in his future anymore, Rome, or Christian, has his start up production company, DPR (Dream Perfect Regime), which includes artists such as V. Hawk, Taehyun, and Roscoe, who all three used to be apart of now disbanded boy group Wonder Boyz and Dabs also known as LIVE.

Hopefully everything will work out for everyone in the end, whether Rome continues with C-Clown or decides to go a different route and focus on DPR. Either way we wish nothing but the best for both Rome, Ray, Siwoo, Kangjun, T.K, and Maru.

What to Expect at GOT7’s First Fanmeeting in USA 2015 [EVENT INFO]

got7 usa dallas chicago san francisco information tickets fan meeting show

A few months after its first anniversary, JYP Entertainment’s newest boy group GOT7 is finally gracing North American fans by coming to three U.S. cities, thanks to Jazzy Group. JB, Jr., Mark, Jackson, Youngjae, Bam Bam, and Yugyeom are heading to San Francisco, Dallas, and Chicago for the first time since debuting to meet their fans, IGOT7, and treat them to an afternoon of laughs, singing, aegyo, and dancing.

Since this is the first time the boys are in the U.S. as a group, expectations are running high. And since GOT7 are a bunch of charismatic, talented, cute guys we can imagine what will probably happen at these events. That’s why we came up with a few things fans can expect at GOT7’s First Fanmeeting in USA.

Official Merchandise

Have your expectations ever been shot down hard at K-pop concerts when you realized the group didn’t bring any merchandise to sell? Well, for GOT7’s fan meets, that won’t be the case! You can score an official light stick, postcard set or slogan towel for under $25 if you pre-order them. And since these will be picked up at the events, you can be sure these are legit. So come and get them while they last!

Jackson Acting a Fool

Don’t get me wrong, Jackson seems to have a very nice personality in real life, but that didn’t get him onto so many variety shows– it was him acting a fool. Jackson’s energy and personality is always jacked up to 100%. Add that he’s in the U.S. with English speaking fans and you know this will quickly turn into the Jackson show. Jackson’s a ball of fun and seems very caring and attentive to fans, meaning we can expect lots of fanservice and memorable moments from him.

Jr. and Bam Bam Aegyo Exuberance

Another thing that we surely won’t miss is GOT7’s aegyo, or cuteness, kings, Jr. and Bam Bam, busting out the cute stuff. These two boys love causing fans to swoon and making their fellow members cringe. Fan meets are just an aegyo fest for these two, so get your cameras and phones ready to capture all the endearing moments.

Yugyeom and Youngjae Forced to Do Aegyo

Despite both members being very cute, they don’t necessarily show cuteness as easily as Jr. and Bam Bam. But since this is their first visit to the U.S. and meeting their fans on this side of the pond, rest assured, everyone will bust out the aegyo, but it’s Yugyeom and Youngjae who will need some persuasion.

Youngjae Forced to Speak English

As seen on their various web shows, Youngjae is often bullied into speaking a little English for the camera. Can you imagine having a whole venue of English speakers present? Of course the hyungs, or older members, will make him say a few words, and he, bashfully, will do so very cutely.

Mark Being Talkative

Well, more like we hope Mark is more talkative at the fan meets since fans will be able to fully understand him in his native language. Because, as seen on his multiple appearances on After School Club, Mark has been easing into talking more when it’s in English. And we know the rest of the boys will need help with translation and we can’t solely rely on Jackson. So Mark better step it up!

Yugyeom Keeping the Hyungs in Check

Any IGOT7 will tell you, affectionately, that GOT7 is a group of dumbasses, especially around fans. The boys are extremely down with fan service, so you can expect them all to be doing lots of aegyo and showing off. That’s why you know the maknae will, at some point, rebel against his hyungs and keep them in check. So expect lots of sass from him, but at the same time, you know JB won’t take it lightly.

Markson in the Flesh

The Mark-Jackson ship is a real thing, and all GOT7 fans know that. We get to see it anytime there’s a camera in front of these two, so expect to see it live at the fan meets. You will have a hard time deciding whether you prefer Mark or Jackson hugging you, or hugging each other.

JB’s Beautiful Eye Smile

In K-pop, the eye smile is a thing, and one we love at that. GOT7’s leader has one of the most heart melting eye smiles in the industry, so you know it will definitely make more than one appearance meeting fans in the U.S. Ladies and gentlemen (hey, we’re inclusive), prepare to swoon for days!

Stellar Vocals and Performances of their Singles

Since the events are essentially fan meets, we can’t really expect a full-on concert. However, rest assured, they at least have to perform one or two of their lead singles, A, Girls, Girls, Girls, and Stop, Stop, It. What’s more, audiences will get to witness Youngjae and JB’s angelic voices, Mark’s stunts, and Yugyeom’s powerful dancing. GOT7 is a group of well-rounded performers who put on a great show, so without a doubt, there will be no dull moment during this event.

Jazzy Group is holding the GOT7’s First Fanmeeting in USA 2015 in San Francisco, Dallas, and Chicago on May 6, 8, and 10, respectively. Tickets range from $55 to $200, with the VVIP tickets including the coveted hi-touch passes and exclusive freebies. To purchase these, go to Etix for the Chicago show and AXS for Dallas and San Francisco. For more information and the latest updates, stay tuned to Jazzy Group’s website and social media site.

5 English Covers by Korean Male Singers

It’s one thing when an artist does a cover of a song, but it’s another thing when that artist is able to move you and convey an even stronger message than the original singer. And it’s even more astonishing when the language of the song isn’t even the singer’s first language.

If you’re a YouTube junkie, then you might’ve seen these covers floating around before, and if not, you’re in for a treat! Here are my top five English covers by Korean male singers.

Artist Spotlight: 10cm [NYC Concert Update]

Since 2010 the Korean acoustic indie band 10cm has been making waves in South Korea, offering the perfect coffee shop tunes to the most coffee-obsessed nation in Asia. It’s no surprise that the duo’s big break came from a song about coffee.

10cm, comprised of main vocalist and percussionist Kwon Jeong Yeol with secondary vocalist Yoon Cheol Jong on the guitar, tambourine, and anything else they decide to include in their folk-inspired songs. The two worked together in the early 2000’s while part of the rock band, Hyerung. The two left that path, and rejoined in 2010.

With simple jazz and folk-inspired sounds and soulful voices, the group is one of South Korea’s most promising, musically innovative musical acts. Many of 10cm songs are filled with bits of humor, sarcasm, and evocative lyrics, matching the nostalgic feel of their music.

Americano I like I like I like

The group’s most prominent hit, Americano is an upbeat, addicting song filled with 10cm’s tongue-in-cheek lyrics, which resulted in the song getting blocked from airplay in South Korea.

When getting some air after fighting with your girlfriend
When getting a smoke after kissing another girl

Despite being banned about a year after being released (due to the slow process to ban many songs in South Korea,) Americano became one of the most popular songs of 2010 and 2011. It, and the group’s other hit song Tonight I’m Afraid of the Dark, helped 10cm win multiple awards, including “Best Pop Song” at the 2011 Korean Music Awards.

10cm has a generally upbeat yet melodramatic, style of music, and songs like I’m Fine Thank You and You became hits in South Korea. The simple acoustic strumming of the guitar matched with and the beats of the jembe, a barehanded-played drum favored by Kwon, are reminiscent of the type of songs that made Jason Mraz and Ed Sheeren famous.

10cm occasionally introduces some new elements to its songs, and a few more rock-esque sounding are certainly in the duo’s retinue, but creating beauty out of simple chords and lyrics is what 10cm thrives at. For coffee addicts who were drawn in by the coffeehouse style (and focused) tunes, 10cm’s harmonica-utilizing Love in the Milky Way Café is an example of 10cm’s songs that offer midway point between the upbeat, faster-paced Americano and the band’s more emotional songs like Tonight I’m Afraid of the Dark.

Also on KultScene: Artist Spotlight: Fromme

10cm’s latest release was 2014’s 3.0, the follow up to the pair’s previous albums 1.0 and 2.0. The title song, Missing You, is a softer song with a more melancholic, mature message while other songs on the album offer a range of sounds, including creating a unique 10cm style of acoustic-rock music on Cigarette Smoking King, which includes elements typically associated with screamo songs. The album goes together as an ode to 10cm’s experiences, but nothing is filled with as much self-mockery as the first track,3rd Album Burdens.

10cm has collaborated with a variety of artists (Leessang, Yoonmirae(Tasha/T) of MFBTY, Haha, Orange Caramel, Verbal Jint) over the years, and has teamed up with the female duo Okdal for a concert series. The two bands will be performing in New York City on June 5, thanks to Urbansiders. You can find out all of the information on the concert’s website page.

SM Entertainment: The ‘Brand’

sm entertainment smtown sm artists idols groups

A few weeks back I wrote about the idea of authenticity that YG Entertainment uses to sell its artists. While I stand by most of my opinions, I feel it comes across as too one sided. I was ready to slam YG and I didn’t stop to consider the ideals of other companies. By other companies I really mean SM Entertainment. They are the yang to YG’s yin. My YG article clearly misses that yang, there is a sense that I prefer a different approach to the YG one, but don’t touch on it. I don’t know if I prefer the approach, but I do prefer SM’s music, so that probably influenced my opinion.

The Asian idol system is a thoroughly transparent one. Fans are allowed to see all elements of how an idol comes to be, their extensive training in not just singing and dancing but acting, PR, and fitness. It is not an entirely glamorous regime, but it’s what it takes to be a star. This transparency means, however, that fans are also under no illusion as to the creators of the music and its authenticity. SM makes no attempt to hide this or push their artists beyond this. So why is SM so popular and yet have no discernible musical figureheads?

Another writer on KultScene got to the heart of this when she wrote about how SM and Disney are very similar companies. It wasn’t totally positive either, equating the recent controversies of SM to Disney’s own troubles with diversity and such. In the context of the companies actual content though, for me, it boils down to the “brand.” These companies are loyal to their brand and what will make their brand the most money. SM has time and again shown that the overall company is more important than any individual. From apparent slave contracts to over-worked idols, no company has had as many high profile departures than SM. The amount of cases show it be a serious problem for young idols and show a lack of understanding from an imposing company.

While groups like Shinhwa and Fly To The Sky left SM after their contracts expired and achieved much success, leaving SM Entertainment prior to the end of the contract has meant difficulties.

The worst of all, of course, is the case where three members left former-quintet TVXQ,  which left Junsu, Jaejoong and Yoochun  (who formed JYJ) unable to attend any Korean television programs. If they do, the station that shows them will potentially not get any SM coverage in the future, losing the station a ton of potential viewers. So JYJ is essentially blacklisted (although Junsu just performed for the first time on television in six years, thanks to EBS.)

Also on KultScene: What Will SM Entertainment Look Like In 2015?

Like Disney, people have grown to essentially worship the brand of SM. Even after all these controversies, loyalty remains and the fans nearly always side with the group and not the individual. This sort of attitude can lead to a company becoming a Disney-like juggernaut, and that’s a problem. If SM continues growing and accumulating smaller companies, like Woollim Entertainment, they can build a possible monopoly. This might not seem so bad since Woollim has been proceeding business as usual with their affairs, but they’re still under SM’s control. If this continues, the whole Korean music industry would revolve around SM, making it possible that if SM goes under, so does all of K-pop.

Let’s steer away from the dramatics for now and back to a real, current problem for SM: the treatment of individual stars. Maybe it’s not a problem, but just a clear difference in style to YG. Emblematic of SM’s love of the brand, they prioritize cohesive groups over individual talents. It was actually listening to F(x)’s Pink Tape and realizing how replaceable they are as a group that gave me the idea for this article. Yet I still think it is one of the best full length albums in K-pop history. Apart from TVXQ and to a lesser extent, SHINee, all of SM’s groups feature members that could be left out and would make no difference to the quality of their music. Similarly, no group has a defining creative head like G-Dragon, CL or even Bobby, whenever iKon debut. Even TVXQ who are possibly the most talented group in K-pop history, do not have a creative head, merely extremely proficient singers and dancers. This lack of strong individuals shows SM are not interested in people who leave the group or company, in order to shine on their own right as solo artists, overshadowing their previous SM-related efforts. When one of them threatens to possibly do this, they are swiftly taken care of, like former Girls’ Generation member and head of fashion line Blanc & Eclare Jessica Jung.

What about the music these large, anonymous groups are releasing though? This is where it gets tougher to pin SM down. SM is known for creating songs it dubs SMP, SM Music Performance. This is a type of song that is created together as a complete song and performance, which cannot be separated. Essentially, these are incredibly complex songs that go above and beyond what a pop song is expected to be. Examples are SNSD’s I Got A Boy and TVXQ’s Rising Sun. What’s really interesting though is that these are the type of songs that big brands would never dream of releasing. They play with structure in strange ways and swap genre without any notice. Pop songs were designed to lull you into security, make you feel at ease so you won’t go against the system. SM does the opposite and its makes for an interesting case.

To find out why SM does this though, is not easy to find out. We can look at the producers of the songs. A lot of them are outside producers, people like Teddy Riley, Will Simms and The Stereotypes. SM would not let them produce such weird tracks without their consent though, and probably would have even specifically picked out songs like this. This comes across as more of a negative in reality, as it makes SM seem uninterested in even their own artistry not just their groups. Always using outside producers gives them an image of business people rather than musicians, but this is not wholly true either. There are many in house writers and producers like Yoo Young Jin, who has worked on almost every great SM song since its inception.

My last and most likely theory has more to do with the Korean public than the music itself. South Korea did not have pop music as we know it until 1992 when Seo Taiji and The Boys burst onto the scene with their musical fusion. They mixed rap, metal, dance, and many more genres to create something never heard before in the country. At the time they used this music to criticize Korean society (see Gyosil Idea,) which Seo Taiji still does to this day, and it worked thanks to the genre mashing and structure bending forms of their songs. They were so popular, however, that this style of music eventually became commonplace in K-pop. So maybe SM’s songs today are not as strange and revolutionary as I thought, but merely the norm in the country.

One thing I can be sure of though is that SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment have completely different ideologies when it comes to their brand. Of what I have written about, they do share at least one thing in common, having lots of great, artsy teasers, but not delivering with the final product (WINNER for YG and EXO for SM) and I hate them both for it. Ultimately, I don’t know what side I come down on in favor anymore. I prefer SM’s music, but I don’t respect any of their individuals as much as I respect CL and her brazen individuality amongst idols. Either way I’m supporting a big brand whose only goal is to make lots of money.

Let’s support neither of them. Go find a smaller company whom you can get behind and encourage by rewarding quality music and artistry with your support. Like Chrome Entertainment, home of Crayon Pop, whose DIY attitude is already changing K-pop or Source Music who have been accused by netizens of making deals with journalists so G-Friend can get on the charts or any other of the large number of smaller, less corporate companies currently struggling to stay afloat.

Playlist Sunday: Korean Idols We Want to Be BFFs With

KultScene Playlist Sunday: Animal Edition

Do you ever sit there and think about what your life would be like if you were best friends with a Korean idol, past or present? It’ll probably be tough to narrow down since there’s such a large pool of interesting people in the industry. Here at Kultscene, we thought it’d be cool to put a list together of idols we’d want to share our secrets and be best friends with.

Fly to the Sky was one of the first Korean artists that I listened to when I first got into K-Pop in 2003. Not only was I drawn to their powerful ballads, but I also thought it was especially cool that one of the members, Brian Joo, was actually from the States. It didn’t occur to me, at the time, that Brian would turn out to be the clown that he is. Whenever Brian’s on stage, he’s a serious performer, granted, FTTS sings a lot of sorrowful love songs, but when he’s off stage, whether he’s doing interviews, on variety shows, or hanging out with friends, he’s a total prankster. He’s full of jokes and isn’t afraid to speak his mind, and he has major sass, which comes out full throttle whenever he’s speaking in English. As a best friend, I think his maturity and experiences would be of great guidance for me, due to the age gap between the two of us. I have yet to meet Brian Joo, but when I do, I’ll take it as the golden opportunity to ask if he’ll want to be my bestie!

I may be in my mid-twenties, but that doesn’t mean I act mature all of the time. GOT7‘s Jackson would be an amazing best friend for many reasons. One, he can speak English fluently so we can quickly and easily communicate between our broken Korean. Two, Jackson is an extremely outgoing person who thrives of sarcasm and fun. And I’m all about sarcasm and fun. Three, he can introduce me to his members and all of the other JYP acts (2PM & miss A, I’m looking at you) and we can all be one big group of friends. In general, Jackson seems like a person you want around to help lighten the mood and create hilarious memories. I don’t have any problems treating him like a little brother either. Having Jackson as a K-pop BFF would keep me on my toes and enjoying everything we do together. One of GOT7’s songs that shows all of their goofy personalities, and especially Jackson’s, is in the last episode of Real GOT7 where they create their own music video for Follow Me. The actual music video doesn’t start until the end of the episode (22:55), but the whole episode is worth watching.

2NE1 was the first group that got me into liking K-pop because of all the awesome, flashy clothes. As I got into the fandom, I quickly learned that CL was the ultimate fashionista within the group, K-pop, and the world. So, of course I would love being best friends with the Baddest Female, and that’s why I chose a song penned by her, Baby I Miss You. On this soulful track, CL left the confidence aside to let her vulnerability show, resulting in a sad ballad about a past relationship with a younger guy. We don’t really know if CL actually wrote this song out of experience, but it certainly spoke to me. Besides her high profile, I think CL and I would connect over our love for fashion, female MCs, and showing the world a hard exterior while actually being kind of soft inside.

— Alexis

As someone who doesn’t really have such a great sense of humor, someone immature would never be a really good friend to me. Someone who knows how to create laughter while still showing off seriousness would be an ideal friend for me, so I pick JYJ’s XIA Junsu as the K-pop idol I’d like to be friends with. Sweet, funny, with a good amount of severity in his personality, Junsu’s flamboyant and fun when he wants to be and serious when he should be. XIA’s Set Me Free featuring MFBTY’s Bizzy (check out our interview!) is about a man trying to forget his relationship, but feels like it could also be a message to me to let loose and let go of things a bit more easily than I tend to do.

When SNSD’s Catch Me If You Can was released, everyone came out of the rafters claiming delight that Hyoyeon was their favourite and they were so happy that she got more lines. I don’t believe you chancers for those chancers for once. I’m sure they’re all Yoona stans who just want to look alt for a moment. Hyoyeon was the first ever K-pop idol I was ever biased towards. I knew straight away she wouldn’t be the most popular member due to her lack of singing ability and being the ugly duckling of the group. I quickly started rooting for the plucky underdog which turned out to be not so hard at all. Her quick wit and dorky attitude are so immediately endearing and charming that I knew the Korean were so fickle not to worship her over the Yoona’s of this world. So Hyoyeon is most definitely my idol BFF and bonus it means I get to hang out with Min, Amber and all her other K-pop mates. I’m picking The Great Escape as my song because Catch Me If You Can is too generic and I’m not fully ready to accept a Jessica-less Girls’ Generation.

If Korea Remade ‘Game Of Thrones,’ This Is What The Cast Would Look Like

With Game Of Thrones returning with its newest season this past Sunday, we couldn’t help but wonder who would be cast if Korea ever remade the series with Korean actors. The series is one of the most popular ever in the history of television and is loved all around the world. The story is so strong and the characters are very solid, that’s why they’re beloved by many fans around the world.

We wish we could re-cast every single character in the series but won’t because that would be a huge list. However, we gathered the main characters for you and selected who could be the best to play the part. If you think this will be difficult to imagine, don’t sweat it, we even photoshopped some images so you can get the whole picture. So here are our picks:

Siwon as Jon Snow

The obvious choice to play Jon Snow is Super Junior’s Siwon. Yes, everybody wants to cast him on everything, but the man is perfection. Jon Snow is a very strong character that needs an actor that has masculine features and, of course, that trademark Jon Snow beard. Siwon is one of the only K-pop artists that we know can grow a good beard and look good, highlighting his manly features. We’ve seen Siwon already play period roles, so we know he looks good in an armor.

Nana as Daenerys Targaryen

Nana is the perfect cast for Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of dragons. The character calls for someone whose beauty will shine through with or without makeup. Nana can show a sexy but innocent side that is required for the character. Daenerys is a strong leading character who is compassionate and beloved by the people who follow her. We have already seen this duality in Nana; her sexy and powerful side with After School and her innocent and softer side with Orange Caramel. However, the description of the character says she is short, and even if Nana is not of short stature, that doesn’t matter since that can be tricked during filming.

Lee Min Ho as Rob Stark

All the Starks are powerful, handsome, and honest men. We are already used to seeing Lee Min Ho as a leading man, and as Rob Stark, he could play more with his powerful side like we saw in City Hunter or Gangnam Blues and combine it with his caring side that we have seen in other dramas like Boys Over Flowers and The Heirs. The only thing that Lee Min Ho will need to be fully characterized as Rob Stark would be to build up some muscle. The character requires a lean but stocky build, so if he lifts up some weights, he will be ready to go.

Jun Ji Hyun as Cersei Lannister

We’ve seen Jun Ji Hyun play serious characters multiple times, and she has the acting skills to play Cersei Lannister; a very complicated character who also happens to be one of the villains. Cersei is sinister and crazy and deals with a lot of struggles. And as all fans of the series know, she has an incestual relationship with her twin brother Jamie Lannister. Jun Ji Hyun would be the perfect villain that we would all love to hate. Plus, her beauty is an important part for Cersei’s character.

Jeon Ji Hyun as Cersei Lannister

Kim Woo Bin as Jamie Lannister

Jamie Lannister is a very complicated character. He is one of those villains that have good intentions but are betrayed by their previous malicious decisions. Kim Woo Bin has a very powerful stare that demands everyone’s attention. As Jamie Lannister, he would be the perfect seductive villain. He is described as being extremely handsome and with great stature, which Kim Woo Bin is no stranger to. He would only need to dye his hair blonde and get green colored contacts to fully portray the role.

Amber as Arya Stark

Arya Stark is a badass character that would be perfect for f(x)’s Amber. Even if the character is younger that Amber’s actual age, she is the perfect fit to play Arya. She is a strong character with an amazing personality and a tomboy nature and plays an important part in the series. Amber would have so much fun with this character, learning how to sword fight, fencing, and she would spend most of the time running around set and having a blast. Amber’s personality is perfect for Arya and she would surely bring an excellent quality to this fun character from Game Of Thrones.

Joy as Sansa Stark

Sansa Stark is a character that evolves throughout the series. She starts with an innocent image, and as events happen in her life and after being tortured and humiliated by the Lannisters in King’s Landing, she starts becoming a strong and powerful woman. Red Velvet’sJoy’s image is very similar to what Sansa is portrayed to be: innocent but also strong and sexy. Joy has showed exactly that in her group, which plays with the concept of duality very well. We are not yet sure if Joy is a good actress, but she has shown great performances within the group.

 D.O. as Tyrion Lannister

Ok, before anyone kills me this is just for laughs. But given D.O’s short stature, he could play the dwarf Tyrion Lannister. However, he would have to go through major special effects and makeup to portray the role. But all jokes aside, Tyrion Lannister is one of the best characters in the series. We don’t know his real intentions since the beginning, but he ends up surprising us with how the character evolves and has all the viewers and readers falling in love with him. D.O. is loved my many and he has shown his excellent acting skills in It’s Okay That’s Love, where he portrayed a very troubled teenager. He would be great for the part of such a complex character.
