Weekly K-Pop Faves: May 15-22

weekly kpop favorite songs may 2016

As summer nears in, K-pop releases are turning up the tempo. So for the faves songs of the week, most of them got us dancing and vibing. Check them out!

“10 Seconds” by AOA (Released on May 16)

I think everyone was at least a little bit disappointed by the AOA’s comeback “Good Luck”. It doesn’t seem to have the growing power of “Heart Attack” either so we can be thankful that the mini album has a couple gems. Best of the bunch is “10 Seconds”, a glistening synth pop track that plays up AOA’s strengths. It’s the perfect soundtrack to an 80s erotic film with a slower pace that allows for sexier vocals and choreography than anything AOA have done yet. Main vocalists Choa and Yuna shine with whistling ad libs while the other members need not exert themselves, favouring sensual whispers.

“All In” by Monsta X (Released May 17)

I’ll be honest, I didn’t have much interest for Monsta X when they debuted (at the time, I was juggling way too many boy groups to deal with another one.) But after seeing then at KCON LA last summer, I can’t help but pinch myself for not having given them the time of day. The groups’ latest release “All In” has entrancing beats from beginning to end, making it impossible to sit still. The song only gets better and better with each listen. Both rappers in Monsta X, Jooheon and I.M add a cool pizzazz and zing to the song making it all the more intense, to go along with the cinematic music video. Watching “All In” is like watching a dramatic post apocalypse movie with a whole lot of great visuals; both in structures and members wise.

— Tam

“Aphrodite” by B.I.G (Released May 16)

I honestly don’t know anything about B.I.G. Since I had included one of their songs in a Misheard Lyrics article in the past, when their video for “Aphrodite” popped up in YouTube, it caught my attention. I can’t say I loved this song or anything, but having zero expectations, it did leave a good impression on me. While the music video and their overall styling seems like something we’ve already seen from other groups throughout the years (I thought of History, for some reason), the song was refreshing in that in evoked a past time in K-pop. The song isn’t swarmed by EDM or trap or even your now standard #Swag hip-hop beats. I was also entranced by the cool contrast in the member’s voices; the vocal line has a high pitch while the rappers have deep voices. I especially like how the song doesn’t go hard a la Monsta X or iKON, but stays perfectly situated within the pop realm where the hip-hop beat is merely an accessory to the overall sound. I don’t think “Aphrodite” is the song that will catapult B.I.G to K-pop royalty, but it’s enough to keep me coming back to see how they’re doing.

“I Remember (How Are You These Days)” by KNK (Released May 16)

If it weren’t for the fact that I scrambling to look for something to write about for our Weekly K-pop Faves this week, I probably would have glossed over KNK’s surprise mid-tempo R&B track “I Remember (How Are You These Days).” It’s a shame really that the group chose not to promote the special release; the easy piano melody and friendly guitars makes it a perfect addition to any springtime themed playlists. It doesn’t go hard like their debut single “Knock” did, and it may be a safe song, but it’s pleasant enough to be enjoyed on its own. The longing vocals, added onto the similar instrumentals and sentimental lyrics pondering old love, reminds me a lot of the more ballad stuff that groups like BEAST has been putting out recently (that is, if they were still active). Throw in a few synths, and you just made yourself a spitting image of BEAST’s “At That Place.” Not to discount the song or the group, though. Despite still being in their awkward rookie group phase, KNK has proven in the past with their covers and now with this that their vocal capacity is anything but amateur.

— Shelley

“Save Me” by BTS (Released May 15)

BTS experimented and blended various genres for their latest album “Young Forever.” I am absolutely in love with the whole trilogy of “the Most Beautiful Moment in Life,” signature trademark of BTS and makes them stand out from the rest of the K-pop industry. “Save Me” is a sentimental track that holds various musical influences. This song consists of various EDM sub-genres from trance to techno and blending in with euro dance. The lyrics emphasize on redemption and desperation of love. For the music video, I was expecting something similar to “I NEED U,” sentimental and pessimistic. But “Save Me” is a dance choreography video with rhythmic moves. The video is shooted on a deserted landscape and gives a gloomy look, but it is aesthetically pleasing. The apparel is simple and elegant similar to the style of the “I NEED U” music video. “Save Me” is a soothing track with catchy chorus which is accompanied synth whistles that create an atmosphere of melancholy. All I can say is that this song is entirely different from “Fire” and I cannot get enough of it.

Top 6 Must Read Articles to Mark Our 2nd Anniversary

kultscene articles top 2016

Two years ago, we decided that we were going to do something. What that thing was, we’re still trying to figure out. But since May 19, 2014, there has been a lot of truly inspired, entertaining, and all-around interesting pieces written by our staff. Over the years, there’s been a few pieces that have stuck out to all of us. They may not have been the most popular articles, but our writers put together a list of their personal favorite KultScene pieces from over the years.

I don’t particularly like lists. I really don’t like Hyunseung’s song. Yet I love this list about Hyunseung’s song.

This feature is definitely one of my favorites because it’s probably the most challenging one I’ve worked on so far as an editor. It’s pretty pleasing to think back how Tamar turned a seemingly boring interview into a compelling feature full of interesting facts and anecdotes with a little editorial direction. It was also a topic no one had discussed before and was later used as reference for multiple sites when Girls’ Generation released “Party.”

— Alexis

Aside from the flashy outfits and occasionally overdone and layered makeup, something that a K-pop fan can always look forward to when awaiting for their favorite artist/idol group’s new music video to drop is the choreography. Whether they impress you or not is up for discussion. In this article, Joe does an excellent job of comparing what are two completely different worlds of dance and how they, in the end, influence one another. Dancing isn’t quite the same as it used to be, but those who appreciate and follow the core values that were made from the beginning will be the ones who will help keep it alive and fun.

— Tam

I would probably pick someone else’s article, except I remember getting so upset when I read the Wall Street Journal’s article that just seeing the title of my own piece makes me fume. This is one of the few, in-depth pieces I’ve done for KultScene and I think it is the ideal sort of think piece we’d like the site to be known for. We began the site two years ago as a place for creative content related to the world of Korean pop culture so… Here’s to the future of KultScene!

The first article from Kultscene which I had randomly chanced upon was also the article that eventually convinced me to join the team. Joe boldly touched on several sensitive topics that I had been very curious about (JYJ’s relationship with SM Entertainment for example) and gave many detailed insights that convinced me to see things from his point of view.

This music video and song review was one of the first articles I’ve published for Kultscene, and by far carries the most personal meaning for me. When the music video for BTS’s “Dope” first came out one of the editors suggested I cover it, and me being the eager rookie correspondent that I was at the time, answered with an enthusiastic “sure!” Only problem was… I knew little to nothing about the group. While that shouldn’t be an issue for a task that required only analyzing the form and content of the song and video, I always had this preconceived notion that good writers researched everything about their subjects before doing their work. In this case, that meant learning all their names and quirks in addition to what the group stood for. All I can say is that a lot went into writing this review; I surprised myself with what I was able to do as a writer of music with a nonexistent background of music theory and of BTS. I would like to think that it was my extensive labor instead of the group’s obvious fanbase that landed this review in our top ten most viewed articles of 2015, but that would be rather narcissistic of me, wouldn’t it? Perhaps almost as narcissistic as highlighting a past review that I had done on a list of Top Ten Must Read Articles.

5 Tracks To Get You Ready for Sungha Jung’s L’Atelier Concert

sungha jung

Popular Korean guitarist Sungha Jung has always been active on Youtube but he recently made a comeback with the release of his sixth album ”L’Atelier”. Featuring a wide range of tracks and Sungha Jung’s amazing finger-style techniques, “L’Atelier” is an album that you do not want to miss out on. The good news is that he is going to have a world tour to promote his album and is heading to my homeland of Singapore on the 28th of May. To get familiarized with his past works, here are fiveexceptional guitar covers and medleys that Sungha Jung has done over the years.

1. (Chen X Punch) “Everytime”

Beginning with this widely popular song off the soundtrack of the hit drama “Descendants of the Sun” by EXO’s Chen and singer Punch, Sungha Jung captures the groovy beat of the song perfectly in his cover while also retaining the essence of the beautiful melody. The cheery mood of the song was brought out by his playing which was never too heavy-handed and consistently light.

2. (BIGBANG) “Loser” + “If You”

BIGBANG certainly had a successful run last year with their “MADE” album and their slew of monthly comebacks, but these two tracks were especially memorable because of their somber and sometimes heartbreaking tone. With his delicate playing style and excellent arrangement skills, Sungha Jung successfully transitioned from one song to the other while also changing the mood of his playing to suit the songs.

3. (Soyou & Junggigo) “Some”

Together with fellow guitarist Ahn Jung Jae, this duet cover of one of 2014’s most popular K-pop songs is a genius creation that doesn’t just feature some fancy finger work- it is also extremely fresh thanks to the stylistic changes made to the original song. The chemistry between the guitarists is clearly evident as well, making this an extremely enjoyable watch.

4. (Taeyeon) “Rain”

This is probably the least well-known of the songs and covers featured on this list but Sungha Jung’s cover of Taeyeon’s recently released “Rain” is extremely impressive, because of how he controls the intensity of his playing to match the emotive vocals of Taeyeon in the song. The chords in this song are also more complicated than in other songs due to the chord progressions used but he manages all the notes and chord changes effortlessly.

5. (Kit Chan) “Home”

The only non K-pop song on this list, this familiar (to Singaporeans at least) National Day Song from 1999 was covered by Sungha Jung last year, shortly before his previous concert stop in Singapore. His touching and soothing rendition of the song gained him many Singaporean fans and hopefully he will be performing this song again.

Are you already excited for his concert? You can purchase tickets for his show at Kallang Theatre through Sistic. The concert is also being organised by local entertainment company Sprout Entertainment and you can find out more about Sungha Jung’s visit to Singapore on their Facebook page.

Weekly K-Pop Faves: May 8-14

favorite kpop songs may 2016

This week, we saw a slew of K-pop group and soloist comebacks and debuts. And while this column is all about picking faves, here are the ones that impressed us the most.

“Flower” by Subin (Released May 12)

Solo digital singles by lead vocalist members of idol groups released with little fanfare are my worst nightmare. Nine times out of ten they are the dullest form of ballad you can find. Companies obviously trying to capitalize on their groups’ downtime with a cheap and easy song that could catch on. All of that makes me appreciate Dal Shabet’s Subin so much more for her new track “Flower”. You could probably call it a ballad but “Flower” has enough going for it to make it not just worthwhile but my favourite song of the week. It’s the perfect summer slow jam with a number of musical flairs that bring it up a level. Joe Hisaishi-style pianos and reverbing fingersnaps make up the subdued rhythm of the track with organs and guitars adding the groove. Vocally as well it does not just go for the big moments, Subin whispers over the verses and has a kind of conversational style for the chorus refrain that immediately catches the ear.

“Talk” by Tiffany (Released May 10)

I’ve never really cared for Tiffany. I can appreciate some of her parts within a Girls’ Generation song, but her voice is a bit… forced… for me. However, every preconception and bias and prejudice went out the window when I found out Nicola Roberts from the epic now-defunct British girl group Girls Aloud had written “Talk.” Honestly, it could be any idol girl singing this song and I’d like it. However, I will give Tiffany some credit for her interpretation, for she does a sufficient good job on the sexy/longing front. Nicola has been writing songs for other artists for years, much to my dismay, but having her and K-pop collide is mind-blowing and I’m here for it.

“Nodding” by Woohyun (Released May 8)

If Sungkyu got experimental on “27” (one of my favorite albums of 2015), Woohyun was set up to be the total opposite. And it is pure ballad perfection. Woohyun’s vocals have always been a mainstay of INFINITE’s songs, and his solo debut song “Nodding” is lyrical expressiveness at its best. His range is all over the place, bringing him to the highest falsettos at points, as he sings of the loss of love. A bit banal of a topic, but Woohyun’s sweet tone is like a warm blanket being wrapped around you when you’re feeling heartbroken. And the music video is so beautifully shot it deserves multiple viewings.

Retro-Inspired Girl Group The Barberettes Makes Music in a K-Pop World [Interview]

Barberettes NYC KultScene1

“This isn’t K-pop,” promised The Barberettes in their opening number at American Beauty in New York City on May 10th.

The doo-wop queens of South Korea were performing in the Big Apple for the first time, an intimate, cabaret-style show with about 50 audience goers. With retro-inspired outfits, poufs galore, and an altogether aura of yesteryear, Shinae, Sunnie, and Sohee took the crowd on a sonic road trip.

Unlike K-pop girl groups from South Korea, The Barberettes were backed by a live band while they sang and Shinae played the guitar. Switching off between English and Korean, singing oldies and more modern songs with a boogie-woogie twist, the trio opened the night with their original song “Little Gals,” then moved onto covers of songs like “Mr. Sandman” by the Chordettes. Incorporated into the 25 song set were an almost equal amount of Korean and Western songs, with The Barberettes drawing not only on swing, pop, jazz, and rock but also on trot and pansori, Korean musical genres.

Consummate musicians, the trio wowed the crowd the whole night, but one of the most unique moments was when they performed what appeared to be a cover of Lee Hi’s latest single, “Hold My Hand.” The joke was on the crowd though; not only was “Hold My Hand” written by Shinae and writing partner B.A. Wheeler, but during a press roundtable earlier in the night Shinae revealed that the song was originally meant for The Barberettes.

“Epik High’s Tablo was a radio DJ for a while and he used to play a lot of Barberettes records on his show,” said Shinae, who was fluent in English and did much of the talking. “And then he was looking for musicians to work on Lee Hi’s album and then he contacted me so I wrote a bunch of songs. And then I actually wrote that song ‘Hold My Hand’ and I thought ‘gosh, I want this song for my band. Should I keep it or give it away to Lee Hi?’ Well, the song was taken and I didn’t know it was a title and then it became the title song. We’re singing that tonight in the original version. Please spread it out. It’s the Barberettes’.”

As the night went on, it was clear that the Barberettes were the musicians they had set out to be when they started down the path. Shinae had the idea of forming a retro-inspired girl group while listening to the music of past decades on the now-defunct streaming app Songza. After forming the Barberettes in 2012, the group gathered a large following. The Barberettes performed at this year’s Korea Times Festival, held at the Hollywood Bowl on May 7th, and expressed delight at the fact that they can play for thousands of people one night and a small concert venue another.

“SHINee on the left, Red Velvet on the right,” recalled Shinae, citing two of the popular young idol groups that also performed at the Korea Times Festival. “And it was actually like ‘Where are we?’ It’s really cool. So we can be that and at the same time we can play in clubs like this with our full band. You know, I think it’s really cool. I think it’s a huge advantage for us not to belong anywhere.”

And they don’t really. The Barberettes aren’t quite K-pop, even though they perform retro pop music and they’ve performed at major festivals like the Korea Times Festival and SXSW, and aren’t quite Korean indie, despite not being signed to a major label. Creating everything themselves is important to the group, who expressed amazement at how far their career has come.

“It’s all about us,” said Shinae while discussing how they were different than other popular Korean girl groups. When asking where they fit in the greater scheme of Korean music world, they laughed and responded “nowhere.”

Barberettes-KultScene-2

“We make our concepts. We plan our way and things. So, I’m thinking this is what we built with our hands. There are many people around the world doing that and it’s really hard to make it work but here we are playing in NYC and other places so I think this is, I don’t believe in God, but I think this is God’s gift. And we would never mess it up until reaching its maximum potential.”

While it may seem like The Barberettes have made it, the three women expressed interest in meeting fans in South America and Japan. But for now, they were in New York, enjoying Chipotle and Central Park.

Shinae, who had been to New York once before recalled how she ran into JYP Entertainment soul singer G.Soul, who directed her to live music venue Village Underground. “I went and it was actually open mic night. So I signed up and I went on stage and I sucked,” Shinae recalled, laughing at herself.

It’s hard to imagine any of the three women sucking. They compared themselves to the stars of the film “20 Feet From Stardom,” pointing out Sunnie’s past as a backup singer to internationally famous acts. Not only has she sung backup vocals at concerts for f(x), Big Bang, and Girls’ Generation, 25-year-old Sunnie is, according to her bandmates, “hilarious.” Full of laughter during the interview, the newest and youngest member of The Barberettes wowed the audience with her powerful vocals later in the night. She also expressed her love of the dramas “Descendants of the Sun” and “Cheese In The Trap,” and telling us “I love [actor] Park Seo Joon.”

Also on KultScene: Sultan Of The Disco Does Funky Right At Seoulsonic NYC 2015 [Interview]

The quietest of the group during the interview, blonde Sohee described being part of the Barberettes as “a very precious experience in life” and thrilled the crowd with her rendition of “Meet The Spring,” a song from the ‘30s. Sohee’s tone matched the old-school style music popular in the first half of the 20th century, eliciting howls from the crowd. But her personal taste geared towards indie, with Sohee citing the Korean indie bands Life and Times and Sultan of the Disco as her recommendations to listeners trying to find new Korean music. Aside from the Barberettes, of course.

Barberettes-KultScene-Lifson

Shinae suggested that any listener trying to get into Korean music outside of K-pop should visit the bar Samcheongro 146 in Seoul. Owned by a vibraphone player known as Mothervibes, The Barbarettes join indie musicians like Sunwoo Jungah, violinist Kang Lee Chae, and Mothervibes herself to perform and have their own estrogen-filled music show.

As for their future, The Barberettes hope that people will be captivated by their music.

“At the end of the day, if you work hard and you come back home from hard work, you lay down and want to put some music on.. We love our concept and what we do and our shows but we would like to be the music that people want to listen to when they actually want to listen to music.”
