9 Things I Learned While On Tour With GOT7

February 2, 2017/in Events, Fan Account /by Tam Huynh

GOT7 #TurbulenceinMIA Mark Tuan Jackson Wang Choi Youngjae

When JYP Entertainment debuted idol boy group GOT7 three years ago, never did it cross my mind that I’d be seeing them perform in North America on a yearly basis, let alone 5 times in a span of eight days. Wait, what? Yup, you read that right. This writer recently attended all five stops of GOT7’s Flight Log: Turbulence in USA 2017 fan meeting tour. The tour started in Miami on Jan. 21st, followed by Washington D.C. on Jan. 22nd, Chicago on Jan. 25th, Houston on Jan. 27th, and ended in Los Angeles on the 29th. And after attending the same show five times, you pick up a few things. In my case, this is what I learned while on tour with GOT7.

[Disclaimer: I paid for my own flights, living accommodations, and show tickets. Press access was only provided for Miami.]

Idols Are Human Beings Too, You Know

We’re dealt with various cards during our lifetime, some good and some bad. What you and I experience throughout our lives might not be anywhere close to the kind of extreme and rigorous practice idols take on and live through mentally, emotionally, and physically on a daily basis. But no matter the situation(s) and how different their life may (seem to) be, at the end of the day, idols are still human beings, just like me and you. Miami, the first stop, was a clear reminder of that.

As soon as the lights hit the stage and the seven members appeared, you could instantly tell from their facial expressions that they were all running extremely low on energy. Who can blame them, though? Considering the countless back-to-back schedules they had for weeks on end prior to that nights show. Even though they all looked like they could use some sleep, well, month’s worth of sleep actually, the guys still powered through and tried their best to to put on a lively and interactive fan meet. Fans wanted leader JB to sing “Holic,” his recently released unofficial Soundcloud solo, but he wasn’t in the best condition and had a sore throat and said he’d sing it at a later time (four cities later and I’m still waiting for a live version!). Despite their fatigued start, they quickly gained momentum by their next stop.

Dab Dab & Sexy Dance

These are words that I can guarantee you will always hear at a GOT7 U.S. show, whether it be five months or three years from now. Within the last 12 months, member Bambam has gained himself the title of Dab King and undeniably lives up to that name every day. And of course, without a single drop of hesitation, introduced himself as “Dabdab” instead of Bambam at the group’s Miami stop. There’s been countless occasions where the crowd has chanted for him to dab and he’s replied with a “dabbing is so old now,” but that never stops him. Oh, but what’s better than a dabbing Bambam? The hyung-line (older members/brothers), especially Jackson, insisting on maknae and dance machine Yugyeom to do his sexy dance, is what. Even though the members are always egging him on, they still manage look away and cringe in embarrassment as soon as he starts to pop his chest. You can almost always expect a sexy dance solo from Yugyeom almost immediately after a Bambam dab-off. While Bambam and Yugyeom are continuous victims of the hyung-line, dabbing and doing sexy dances, don’t seem to bother this maknae duo whatsoever!

Derp Kings & Self Shippers

Time and time again, GOT7 has proven themselves to be the kings of making derpy faces. Whether it’s a penalty for losing a game or because they simply feel like it, just like clock work, these guys will surprise you with their infinite amount of derpy facial expressions. It was in the middle of a game during their Houston stop, Bambam aligned himself with the cameraman in the pit and started making one of many of his notorious faces to which led JB to come over and also start doing the same.

And just when you thought you had these guys all figured out, just when you thought you’re over being surprised with the things that come out of their mouths, GOT7 goes ahead and self proclaims their “ship” names for one another! What?! That’s so wild right? When have you ever met a group who openly talks about these kinds of things? As soon as the members mentioned it, l you could hear the fans break out into massive shrieks and then almost simultaneously hear immediate laughter on stage from the members in acknowledgement of the names “MarkBam,” “MarkJin,” and my new favorite “Parkson” (Park Jinyoung, Mark, and Jackson).

AmeriThaiKong & Jinyoung?

GOT7 is known as an international group; eldest member Mark Tuan is Chinese-American, Jackson Wang is a Hong Kong native, and Bambam hails from Thailand. Usually, if English needs to be spoken, you can count on these three to deliver and be the group’s very own translators. But wait a minute, it looks like they’ve gained themselves a fourth English speaker, Park Jinyoung. I may not know him on a personal level but Jinyoung’s always come off a studious fella; he’s mentioned his love for reading, enjoyment of studying, and wandering curiosity. That all showed as he made a conscious effort to speak in English during each of his closing statements for every leg of the tour. Jinyoung surprised the crowds with his almost fluent and strong pronunciation every time he spoke. It’ll only be a matter of time before he can hold an entire conversation [in English] with Mark, Jackson, Bambam, and even fans.

Comeback and KCON 2017

At the end of each stop, the members hinted that although they’re leaving us [tonight], we shouldn’t be too sad since they’ll be “coming back” soon. Interpret that however you will, but it has been four months since the group released and finished promoting Flight Log: Turbulence, so it’s only Korean music scene norm that they’re in the process of making another comeback. As much as we all want them to get some much needed TLC and vacation time, we’re all just as psyched about their new music (especially with all the teasing JB and Youngjae have been doing with their Soundcloud accounts). To top off it off, Mark mentioned during his speech in LA that they might even be coming back for KCON, which lead the crowd to erupt in ecstatic cheers. If all of this is indeed true, you all better start saving, like yesterday.

“If You Do” Is Iconic

In a previous review, I mentioned that “If You Do,” was GOT7’s best song to date, and 16 months later, I still strongly stand by that statement. I’ve seen them perform this song live eight times since it came out and have absolutely loved every single second of it, all the eight times. It’s no doubt that this song was an extremely pivotal moment for a lot of fans. “If You Do” transformed these seven delicate and goofy guys (which in reality they still are) into one hell of a charismatic bunch. If you weren’t a part of the fandom before this song came out, then you were definitely in when it was released. As if this song wasn’t already the creme de la creme in my life, I enjoyed it a hundred times more when Team JMJ (JB, Mark, and Jinyoung) danced to the slo-mo version of “If You Do” as part of their “random play dance” segment in Houston. Just when I thought it couldn’t have gotten any better, it did.

L.A. Knows How To Turn Up

The crowds in Miami, Washington D.C., Chicago, and Houston were loud, but L.A. easily took the cake home for the most “turnt up” crowd. Could it be that it was the last stop on their tour? Or maybe because it’s Mark’s hometown? Or even perhaps it was the fact that Elliott Yamin (placed third on American Idol, Season 5) was there and we all got to hear Youngjae sing “Wait For You” sort of as a dedication song? Regardless of the reasonings, the Pasadena Convention Center was on fire from beginning until end.

Also on KultScene: Which GOT7 Member Are You?

Although the L.A. show was shorter than the four cities prior to it, GOT7 made sure to never let there be a dull moment, whether that meant Bambam and Yugyeom dancing to “Juju On That Beat,” when Mark was sprawled out on the stage in defeat from not being able to name the correct song, or every time the members rushed over to Danny Lim, the MC for the tour, during a game, corner and surround him, causing him to burst out into laughter every time. But what really determines L.A. as the winning city? Probably when Mark got a bit choked up during his closing statement, thanking everyone for coming out, because every audience member knew how much it meant to him to be back on his home turf and being able to perform in front of his family once again.

GOT7 adores IGOT7’s

This isn’t breaking news because if you’re an ahgase (their fanclub name), then you should already know that you’re the apple of these guys’ eyes (no matter how crazy some of you may be). Fans have heard time and time again from GOT7 about how grateful they are for this fandom and for all the love and support they’ve been shown, but most of us have only ever heard these things online, as we’re watching an awards/music show or celebrating an anniversary. In reality, it’s a completely different feeling when you’re hearing and seeing something over the internet versus when you get to witness and experiencing it in the flesh. Just like anything else in life, really, you can’t get the full effect and truly tell how someone or something may be until you’re actually given that opportunity to see it upfront. There might be people out there who consider some members to be cold and standoffish, but in fact — and I’ve been lucky on numerous occasions to witness this — all seven members are well beyond affectionate and remarkably lovely people.

Sometimes when you go to any kind of show, at the end, the artist usually thanks the crowd and in some instances, they feel like empty words. But whenever GOT7 says it, especially when Jackson comments and asks things like, “Did you guys make sure you ate before coming here?”; address situations on how you need to take care of your own health and not worry about them (GOT7) because they can take care of themselves; make sure that you work on your own happiness first and then you can worry about others , shows you how mindful he is of the fans, and it’s something that sticks with you and will forever be ingrained in your head.

2017 WILL Be GOT7’s Year

Every fan wants their faves to be able to say “this is our year” and actually accomplish it. Sometimes it works out, other times it doesn’t. However, considering the firm rate that GOT7’s been peddling at, with the year only just beginning and having just finished a five city US tour, leaving us all in anticipation for a new album and future concert(s), my biased heart truly believes that 2017 will indeed be GOT7’s year. The group is headed at a solid pace to truly making it theirs.

I crunched a few numbers together and found myself running on tens hours of sleep in a span of nine days days and had flown for a total of 8,274 miles. With all of that mileage, I could’ve made my way over to South Korea, WITH a layover! But that trip can wait a bit longer. Flight Log: Turbulence in USA 2017 not only allowed me to see the extraordinary performers that GOT7 are again, but this tour also gave me the opportunity to visit cities I usually wouldn’t think of visiting otherwise. In addition to traveling to new cities and experiencing new things, this tour also gave me the chance to do one of my favorite things, and that’s to meet up and spend time with friends, both new and old! Don’t you love how music can bring people together?

Questions We Have After The End of ‘Sassy Go Go’

November 26, 2015/in Fan Account /by KultScene

korean drama sassy go go cheer up

By Sana Parvayz

After a good 12 episode run, “Sassy Go Go,” aka “Cheer Up,” unfortunately met its end this past November 10. The romcom K-drama, that A Pink’s Eunji starred in along with actor Lee Won-Keun, created a lot of buzz while it aired and was very popular. The cast further included VIXX’s N and Ji-Soo, who appeared in “Angry Mom.”

“Sassy Go Go” is high school K-drama, set in Sevit High School, which portrayed the struggles and inferiorities of students. As students were rated by their academic performance, the sole focus of students were only achieving higher ranking by any means. The brutal environment of Sevit High made it impossible for students to hold on to their moral values. The chaos of “Sassy Go Go” started as the lowest and highest ranks clashed in Sevit High.

“Sassy Go Go” really cheered the viewers up with its happy ending. We’re definitely sad that it’s over, and the fact that it was so short left so many things unsaid and made us wonder about all the potential possibilities. So let’s talk about all the cliffhangers that “Sassy Go Go” left us thinking about.

[Disclaimer: This article contains spoilers, read at your own discretion.]

The Relationship of Kim Yeol and Kang Yeon-Doo

By the end of the show, the issues between Kim Yeol (Lee Won-Keun) and Ha-Joon (Ji-Soo) have been resolved. Seo Ha-Joon is fine with Kim Yeol dating Yeon-Doo (Eun-Ji). Meanwhile Kim Yeol already noticed how dearly his father loves Yeon-Doo’s mom. How he has no objection against his dad getting married to Yeon Doo’s mom. During the last episode, we got a glimpse of Kim Yeol making arrangements for the change in his guardianship so he could date Kang Yeon-Doo and their parents could get married.

Also on Kultscene: What K-Drama Cliche Is Your Life?

The adoption of Kim Yeol is not guaranteed because anything could happen in K-dramas at the very last moment. Even if Kim Yeol gets adopted, he could not deny the blood relation to his father. But still, how strange it sounds. Imagine what sort of family it would be? An absurd lovey dovey family!

source: irrational-obsessions-gottcha78.tumblr.com

What if their parents wish to expand their family? What would they tell their future child? That Kim Yeol and Kang Yeon-Doo are your siblings and they are dating each other? Huh? I don’t know what the writers were thinking, but…

Second Lead Syndrome: Seo Ha-Joon

Second lead syndrome is the reason why most of us hate love triangles. The poor second lead always get neglected in Korean dramas and it breaks our heart to see them bleed every time, even if we already know that this fate is inevitable.

I am head over heels for Seo Ha-Joon, and I guess most of you are too. Our poor Ha-Joon was abused by his aggressive father and attempted suicide when he could no longer handle the situation. He only has Kim Yeol as his friend, who was luckily able to help him with his anger management issues. Just like Yeon-Doo, we all couldn’t help but to sympathize for Ha-Joon. Yeon-Doo tries to assist Ha-Joon as a friend, but gradually Ha-Joon started to develop feelings for Yeon-Doo and we got a love triangle in “Sassy Go Go.”

The chemistry between Kang Yeon-Doo and So Ha-Joon is adorable, sassy Yeon-Doo teasing shy Ha-Joon.

source: mychanchans.tumblr.com

Seo Ha-Joon not only bled but also sacrificed his love for his friend. However, he said that he would get over it. But deep down, he would always have feelings for Yeon-Doo. The ending of the drama just gave us hope for Seo Ha-Joon and we’d love to know what the future has in store for him

The Not So Evil Kwon So-Ah and Ha Dong-Jae

We would like to see more of Kwon So-Ah and Ha Dong-Jae, and how Dong-Jae would bring out the best in her personality. Just one episode wasn’t enough for us.
How could someone get over something in an instant? I think Dong-Jae would need more time to recover from his complex of touching. We are sure that Kwon So-Ah would help him.

source: actor-jisoo.tumblr.com

Sevit High Teachers

And how could we forget our favorite teachers? We just got a flicker of interaction between them in the ending episodes. Definitely, we would like to see the chemistry between them and the reaction of their students. We would like to know what the former principal is doing. What new changes are being brought by the current Sevit High teachers. Who is the new principal?

The Flawless, Absolute, & Perfect Kim Yeol

On the funny note, we just found out in the last episode that Kim Yeol is a squid. Kim Yeol lied to us in all those 12 episodes. He kept on skidding from here to there and we only noticed his act in the last episode.

source: hrtofdorkness.tumblr.com

Dreams For The Second Season

After looking at all these cliffhangers, there is a possibility of a second season. The possible outcome for season two could be that Kim Yeol and Yeon-Doo would find it hard to date each other as their parents would get married. On the side note, a new transfer student would enter Sevit High. This transfer girl would be a best rival Kim Yeol could ever think of. It would be first time for Kim Yeol to face defeat and he would probably develop interest in that girl. Whereas, Yeon-Doo would feel left out and would likely spend more time with Ha-Joon. No doubt, this time Kang Yeon-Doo would fall for Ha-Joon and our second lead would finally get a happy ending.

The bromance between Kim Yeol and Ha-Joon would stay strong no matter what ever happens. Not even Yeon-Doo could surpass it. That ship would sail smoothly to make us swoon worthy. Kwon So-Ah and Ha Dong-Jae would start dating. As, they both understands each other really well. They would help each other out and would look cute together.

The former principle would reflect on her actions and would despise bribery and greed. She would join Sevit High as a teacher and would try to win the hearts of students. Due to the previous notorious acts of Sevit High, new actions would be taken and co-curricular activities would be encouraged in school.

“Baek Ho” and “The Real King” would again join forces to participate in the cheerleading competition, and this time, they would win the trophy. Season two would end on a happy note as well.

But in the meantime, Cheer Up! and enjoy the exhilarating theme song and go down the memory lane of “Sassy Go Go.”

BIGBANG’s New Jersey Concert Made Fans Say ‘Wow, Fantastic Baby’

October 14, 2015/in Fan Account, Fans, Uncategorized /by Katherine

bigbang concertI still remember sitting in the passenger seat of a friend’s car while on winter break from our sophomore year of college, catching up on the past semester when a song began to play through the speakers. The song was unfamiliar, yet refreshing, and even though it was in a foreign language that I did not understand, I found myself nodding along. The hook was quickly etched into my brain and even hours later still had “I’m so sorry, but I love you” repeating in my head- BIGBANG’s “Lies.” Fast forward to November 2012, I was finally going to see BIGBANG, the band that plunged me into the world of K-pop live in concert, and the show was everything that I thought it would be. The show gave me such a concert high that I thought nothing could beat the feeling of pure joy. After a while there was a sinking feeling that it was pretty unlikely that I would get to see BIGBANG in concert again. That was until they began releasing singles from their “MADE” series. Soon after the last single was released, a world tour was announced and my heart began to race.

Back after three years, BIGBANG made their way through North America on their MADE Tour. Like in 2012, they performed for two nights at New Jersey’s Prudential Center. I was lucky enough to snag tickets to the sold out first night, Oct. 10. Selling out a venue always brings me pride as a fan, like bragging rights, having a “yeah, we did that” sort of feeling. People began lining up as early as 12pm the day before the show, braving the cold night and a quick rain storm all to ensure the best spot to see the idols. Crowds gathered outside of the Prudential Center hours before the show where a flash mob performed, fans could purchase tour goods, and a DJ blasted music that fans could dance to until doors opened. It was obvious that I was not the only one excited for BIGBANG’s return to the tri-state area.

As the lights dimmed, the arena erupted into screams and cheers as BIGBANG appeared on stage. The concert opened with the high energy song “Bang Bang Bang,” which brought literal bangs in the form of fireworks bursting at the climax of the song.

Although I love the excitement of dancing around with other fans, the loud music, and the flashing lights, some of my favorite parts of the night were when BIGBANG slowed down with some of their more mellow songs. So it’s no surprise that the slow version of “Haru Haru,” which fans sung along to, still remains one of my favorite parts of the show. Even back in 2012 when I first heard this version live, there was something magical about clearly hearing the audience singing along to every single word. It created a sense of unity with the band and the audience, and I feel it’s one of the best ways to show appreciation for an artist.

Fan interactions are also on the top of the list of enjoyable parts of a live concert, and BIGBANG didn’t disappoint. The boys took a short break to introduce themselves and interact with the audience, each member showing a bit of his personality. They all seemed to be more comfortable conversing in English than their last concert and the extra dialog was greatly appreciated by the fans.

Seungri asked where everyone was from inciting screams from the crowd every time he listed a random city. Daesung talked about how he could not see the audience because his hair was covering his eyes. He asked the audience if they wanted to see his eyes, to which he swept his bangs back and made silly, border-line creepy, faces into the camera. Moving right along, G-Dragon asked the audience to sing with him, and began the chorus of “Bad Boy” and the audience quickly chimed in to sing along with him and they went straight into the song “Bad Boy.” BIGBANG continued the mellow atmosphere with “If You” and then quietly left the stage for a few moments.

The solo performances were up next, where each member showcased their own styles. Between each performance were short videos featuring each member, carrying a Hollywood blockbuster style cinematography theme throughout the show. The video clips ended and Daesung appeared on stage behind a drum set, banging away fiercely, another thing he can add to his list of talents. As he continued to play, the rest of the group joined him on stage and went straight into “Sober” with Daesung remaining behind the drums playing along. They continued onto sing “Bae Bae” and then announced that the next song will be their last, before beginning the song “Fantastic Baby.” Again everyone was out of their seats jumping and dancing along with the band that the floors of the arena shook. BIGBANG left the stage to cheers and returned quickly for an encore performance where they sang “We Like to Party.”

Also on Kultscene: Los Angeles Korean Festival Celebrated Korean Culture With Great Food & Performances

The band remained on stage after the show to thank all their fans for coming and making the show enjoyable for them. After a bit of goofy-ness from Daesung and Taeyang. Que a strategically placed impromptu Michael Jackson-esque dance. And let’s not forget the mini heart parade from all of the members as they said their goodbyes.

BIGBANG truly lived up to their reputation of putting on an exciting well produced show. And now that the concerts are over and the post-concert depression sets in, let’s hope that they will return soon.

Fan Account: G.O.D’s “Chapter 8” Review

July 27, 2014/in Fan Account, Fans /by KultScene

By Olivia Veizas

I entered the K-Pop scene in the mid 2000’s, so I missed the whole 90’s birth of K-Pop and, subsequently, groups like H.O.T and G.O.D I even missed the music phenomenon known as DBSK/TVXQ, since they were promoting primarily overseas when I was first exposed to the genre (I know, shame on me).

So how did I spin the wheels of time and return to a ‘90’s group? First of all, the video below helped a lot. In fact it sparked my interest in G.O.D aka Groove Over Dose (my favorite acronym thus far).

After watching this video, I was blown away by how well this guy sung in Korean, but also by how everyone broke into the chorus so easily. I immediately had to look up the song, and after reading the beautiful lyrics, I fell in love with G.O.D.

From that point, I started listening to some of their older songs, which were equally as amazing; both lyrically and music wise. But then I heard that they came out with a comeback album, so I had to listen to that at once. This year marks their 15th anniversary, and Chapter 8 is their 8th album. Wow, daebak!

Check out these cool articles around the web

  • JYJ wants DBSK to reunite!
  • Flower Men of Korea
  • [Newsmaker] K-pop legend Seo Taiji to return
  • Artist Spotlight: Megan Lee

The album starts with a beautiful instrumental song 5+4+1+5=15. The song feels like it belongs in a Disney movie soundtrack, and I love that! Of course the numbers in the song title peeked my interest, and I was sure it had a meaning behind it. At the end of the song, they deliver some lines that explains its meaning. They began as five, down to four when one group member left, then were all left as one and now they are back to five again, and of course all these numbers together equal 15 which marks their anniversary (were they waiting to do this? ^.^)

The second song once again sounds like it belongs in a Disney movie as it begins (maybe it’s the orchestra). However, it then turns into a sultry R&B song. An Ordinary Day was a song they had debuted in their 6th album, where they promoted as four. But in this version (deemed the original version), all five members partake in it. When I first read the lyrics, I thought it was a song about a guy forgetting a girl after she broke up with him. As I kept on reading, I think it’s actually a guy talking about a girl who had passed away, and he’s starting to forget her. He apologizes for this because he didn’t want it to happen, but “what can he do?” All in all, a very beautiful and heart wrenching song.

When Sky Blue Promise came on, I had a big smile on my face. Why? Because it had the same beat as the song that brought me to them in the first place, One Candle. Even though I was just introduced to the latter, I could still sense that reminiscent feeling of the song. Throughout the track, the lyrics themselves are looking back at the good old times, but also looking to the present times where they are all grown up. It’s a fresh and uplifting beat.

Saturday Night is just a fun fun fun song. The beat has sort of an old school beat to it, but it makes you want to get up and dance. And if you haven’t watched the music video, I strongly suggest you do. G.O.D become like young drunk hooligans in the video.

Ahjussi’s and Megan Lee is cute conversation between Megan and G.O.D, where they ask her how old she was when they debuted, and she says four. Then they ask if she knows who they are, and she replies that when she rode with her mom’s car, she heard their songs a lot. Megan then sings one of their songs for them (not sure which one), and then hilariously sings BIGBANG’S Lies which leads to a silence in the studio broken by them cursing at her (they’re joking of course).

That fun little conversation is a lead into The Story Of Our Lives featuring Megan Lee. This song makes you feel like breaking into tears. It shows how people are not perfect, make mistakes, and sin day after day. It then showcases it’s beautiful message that we should not hide away our love and instead show it to the close people around us.

The next song Smile sounds like it came out straight out of a coffee shop. Very sweet and melodic and if a guy sang this to me I would never stop smiling.

After that, we come across another fun dance song, Stand Up. In this track, G.O.D wants everyone to get up whether you are a man, a woman, young or old. It’s so energetic it would never fail to make me get up and start dancing.

Sing For Me features IU, and is a cute song that shows that music has no age. It can be enjoyed and performed by anyone by anyone. G.O.D don’t want to been as seniors because they feel like they can sing and rap just like the idols that are popular now.

I Like It is simply gorgeous! It’s a beautiful love song of a guy exclaiming that he wants to spend the rest of his life with his love. The line that gets me is, “even if we don’t get butterflies anymore, I want to spend my life with you.” A lot of people search for that love where they want to still feel butterflies even in old age. But realistically, we become accustomed to those we fall in love with and that fresh new love excitement wears off, as do the butterflies. However, as this song points out, true love is so much more than just that initial butterfly stage. A lot of new pop songs capture that fresh aspect of love and I love that G.O.D brings this song with a more mature look at love.

G’Swag has a bit of a twang to it and an old school groove. G.O.D wants to show us that even though they came from an older decade they still have an impeccable style and swag. This song has the ability to make you feel like you are the coolest cat in the room.

Finally, we end this incredible album with a sad goodbye song, The Lone Duckling. It’s depressing to end such a fun album with such a sad song, but I guess it fits. It’s a ballad about saying goodbye but not being able to let go and feeling alone and empty inside. Sort of like I feel now that this album is over… good thing I can press replay!
